GMD: Jimmy Charles returns to MD for Country Calling Fest

WMDT – Maryland Native and award-winning country recording artist Jimmy Charles is back in town for this weekend’s Country Calling festival, bringing a star-studded music line-up to Ocean City.

GMD caught up with Charles ahead of his performance, and he tells us he’s been hard at work making a name for himself in the industry. Charles has performed in front of thousands and garnered a large fan base, especially in his home state of Maryland. Between releases like “It’s a Maryland Thing, You Wouldn’t Understand,” “To Beach Their Own,” “You Were There,” and “They Grow up Too Fast,” a song dedicated to his son.

His success and popularity have recently won him three major awards: “Country Artist of the Year,” “Country Performer of the Year,” and “Song of the Year. “I have my fans to thank for that because they showed up, thanking NIMA for the nomination but after that, it was 100% fan-voted,” says Charles. He goes on to say, “It’s just been amazing to watch millions and millions of streams and I can go on my Instagram and look up my audio and see it all around the world making these beautiful memories of something I created, and I can’t tell you as an artist what that means, it almost gets me choked up just thinking about it.”

While Charles has been hard at work, he now has the opportunity to be back in Maryland performing at Country Calling. The Country Calling Festival and Charles are Eric Church, Jelly Roll, Riley Green, Martina McBride, and Clint Black.

We’re told his pride in Maryland is something he holds near and dear to his heart and there’s something special about being able to perform in a place that has inspired his music for years. “I can’t tell you how many people have told me they’re excited to see my show and are going to be there early and show up so that means the world to me.” Charles adds, “When I take the stage, I want them to think I’m so good, I want to move them, I want them to have a good time, I want them to just smile and dance and be happy and forget about everything else, that’s my show. ”

Charles does have some advice for young artists out there, saying he says take it day by day and to not worry about the fame. He says to focus on being successful, and staying true to yourself.

Jimmy Charles will be performing on the main stage Friday October 4th at 1 p.m.
