Experts warn of various toxins that can make pets sick
DELMARVA – Whether you’re a new or experienced pet owner, you might not be aware of all the things that can make your furry friends sick.
Most pet owners know to keep chocolate and onions away from their cat or dog. But, according to experts, there are some lesser known items that can make your furry friends sick. Dr. Marianne Bailey with the Queenstown Veterinary Hospital says if you have a pet that likes to chew on things, you might not want to keep lilies and poinsettias in your house. If your pet goes outside, she says rat or mouse bait could be a concern.
“There’s a type that can cause an animal to bleed internally to death, and then there’s a type that causes more neurological side effects, typically death is not a side effect which is good.”
Additionally, Dr. Bailey says something such as drinking water out of a Christmas tree could cause gastric irritation in pets, like an upset stomach.
If you think your pet got into something, or you’re unsure of what it could be, Dr. Bailey says the Pet Poison Hotline is a great place to start.
“Give them a call, tell them what your pet got into and ask for their advice. They’ll help you get started with a case and then they’ll work with your veterinarian as far as what the next steps are.”
As a precaution, experts say to be wary of plants you bring into your home, and check any incoming flower arrangements. You should also make sure to keep an eye on your pets if they go outside.
