Education key to NIL implementation in Delaware

DELAWARE – High school athletes can accept compensation for endorsing or promoting products in Delaware beginning Friday, but there are many rules and regulations that are imperative to know to prevent violations.

Student athletes cannot use their school uniform, logo, name, mascot, etc., or use their school’s facilities. Students can’t promote gambling, smoking, or alcoholic products. If any agreement is reached for an NIL deal the athlete must inform their school’s athletic director within 72 hours.

DIAA executive director David Baylor says educating everyone involved is a priority for his organization.

“It’s incumbent upon everyone involved. All of the stake holders. From the DIA to the member schools to the student athletes, to the coaches, parents, administrators to understand what the NIL regulation is,” Baylor told WMDT Sports. “To make sure they have knowledge of it so they make sure there’s no violation of it because if there is it could potentially put an amateur status in jeopardy.”

DIAA continues to investigate Indian River football for their involvement in a local commercial. Baylor tells us even under the next NIL rules that there are potential violations, such as using school property and being in school uniform.

Baylor tells us the intent is to go into the community and have seminars to educate parents and student athletes on what the rules are.

The organization will also be working with athletic directors to make sure they are aware of the rules as well to prevent future violations.
