DIAA concludes Indian River NIL investigation
DAGSBORO, Del. – The DIAA has issued a formal letter of reprimand to Indian River High School regarding the school’s failure to comply with DIAA NIL regulations following a weeks long investigation.
This all stems from a local commercial that featured over twenty Indian River high school football players in full uniform, along with their coaches, which was supervised by the school athletic director.
DIAA concluded that their involvement was a violation of rule 1009-2.5.1.7, prohibiting the use of student-athletes to promote or endorse commercial products through media.
Here are the actions taken by DIAA, including the letter of reprimand. DIAA has requested the school request the commercial to be pulled from future broadcasts, and Indian River must review and update their media relations policy regarding student-athlete endorsement within 30 days.
DIAA seems to be sending a warning with this decision, stating that future violations may result in more severe consequences.
Indian River has the right to appeal the decision.
Indian River issuing the following statement to WMDT:
“We are appreciative of DIAA for conducting a thorough review of this matter and grateful this issue will not affect the hard work of our team, coaches and volunteers. School and district officials commit to a thorough understanding of all DIAA regulations moving forward to prevent another issue arising in the future.”
Indian River football is currently 6-1 on the season, and one of the top contenders for the 1A title in Delaware.
