Weather Tidbits: The Autumnal Equinox

This edition of Weather Tidbits will be discussing the Autumnal Equinox, also known as the first day of fall. Equinox means equal nights in Latin. Both the Autumnal and Vernal Equinox occurs when the sun shines directly onto the equator. On these dates, there is a nearly, but not exactly, equal amounts of daylight and darkness at all latitudes. After the autumn equinox, the earth continues to orbit in such a way that the northern hemisphere gradually continues to face further away from the sun up until the winter solstice. The start time of the Autumn Equinox can vary by a couple of days between September 22 to September 24. In 2024, the Autumn Equinox beings Sunday, September 22nd at 8:43 AM.
