The Night of Elegance event gives the homeless community in Georgetown hope
GEORGETOWN, Del. – The homeless community was uplifted by the Night of Elegance event presented by the Grace and Love community outreach. Coordinators from Sheperd’s Office and Higher Ground we’re there to put everything together.
The unhoused population was taken to the Millsboro Fire Department, and they wore formal clothing, hit the red carpet, and enjoyed a prepared dinner.
Casey Campbell, an unhoused honoree of the ceremony, said this was a special moment for her, and the community. “I think it was really beautiful, they did our hair, our makeup, it has been so long since I had even a haircut, and she took two hours plus on my hair and made me feel like something special”
The Night of Elegance, hosted by Emcee, Lou Hernandez, said this event inspires people, to keep moving forward. “Hope is something I believe they have lost, so things like this, events like this, help them realize yes there is hope, humanity is good.”
Hernandez also is the Director of Higher Ground; he continues to strive to provide the community with the proper resources. However, he knows often, the unhoused can go overlooked, he urges the Delaware community to come together, to support a vulnerable population.
“A lot of negative publicity lately especially in Georgetown about the homeless population, people, politicians saying there are only 5 homeless in the tents, totally wrong, I mean there 50, 60 people on the street that come to my building daily.”
Campbell hopes the gala will help people understand the homeless community can often be misunderstood.
“I think the public has a way of dehumanizing people that are like street people, thinking we’re all on drugs, are prostitutes, or all committing crimes, but that’s not it, and we have not always been this way either, so I think it brings humanity to the situation and helps the community get to know us.”
