Somerset County continues to deal with flooding issues

CRISFIELD, Md. – Somerset County Public Schools were forced to close Monday due to some serious flooding around the county.

Residents are used to the flooding, but they’re fed up regardless. “It’s bad when you can’t get out because with cars it’s iffy, you don’t know how deep it is further in you go. Either direction, It’s flooded,” said Pat Taylor, who’s lived in Crisfield for over 20 years.

This most recent flood is far from the worst Taylor has seen, but it never gets any less annoying having to completely change her plans: “It’s very frustrating. And if you have appointments, it makes it worse. You have to reschedule or just, you know, stay home.”

Taylor counts herself lucky that she hasn’t had to worry about water damage in her building.

Even though all the roads to her apartment are blocked she says her daughter, who lives in another part of town, gets it worse: “They can’t get out of the house when it’s like this. They have more water than us.”

Holly Watkins has only been living in Crisfield for 3 months, she had heard about the flooding issues but has never seen it firsthand before. “It’s definitely worse than what I imagined. I’ve seen other streets underwater, but after all the storms I’ve seen, I didn’t know Somerset Avenue would be this bad,” Watkins said.

She had no choice but to wade through the water to get her groceries, she hopes to be more prepared next time now that she’s seen it for real: “I’m definitely going to, you know, start keeping track of the high tides and how it might impact my routine.”
