2:30 p.m. UPDATE: Delaware State Police say a fugitive is responsible for this crash.

According to police, they were called to a residence in the 16000 block of Whitesville Road in Delmar for a report of a fugitive, identified as 33-year-old Clifford David, who had escaped from the Sussex Community Corrections work crew earlier in the day. Before they got to the scene, police learned that David had fled from the residence with a 25-year-old woman and three children, ages 1, 2, and 7, in a Chevrolet Silverado, which was later determined to have been stolen from the Harrington area.

While fleeing, David allegedly stopped to remove the children from the truck, but the woman pulled two of the children back in. Before driving away again, a witness took custody of the 7-year-old, who was not injured. David then crashed the vehicle on August Road near Whitesville Road.

Preliminary investigation revealed that David was driving southbound on August Road in a reckless manner and at a high rate of speed. He then failed to negotiate a curve, causing the truck to veer off the road and drive into a ditch, subsequently flipping. The woman and two children were reportedly not restrained and were ejected. All three were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

David fled the scene after the crash, and troopers were not able to locate him in the area. At around 7 a.m. Wednesday, David was found on Sussex Highway near Salt Barn Road in Laurel and was taken into custody.

David was held at SCI on a $21,000 secured bond on three counts of first degree reckless endangerment, theft of a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, second degree vehicular result, two counts of third degree vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an injury crash, and multiple traffic offenses.
