Parsonsburg Fire Department celebrates 100 years of service

PARSONSBURG, Md – Not many people, places, or things can say they have existed for 100 years, the Parsonsburg Fire Department can make that claim.

Today at the fire station, a celebration to honor and recognize the achievement of 100 years of service. Parsonsburg native and volunteer at the company, Ryan Whittington, said this is significant not for current successes, but what it will mean for the future. “When you think about 100 years, there’s a lot of people that have come before many of us today that have laid the foundation, we’re very thankful, that we forged ahead, today about honoring our past and securing our future.”

A parade filled with departments from all across Maryland and Delaware. Friends, family, and community came out for food, games, and live music. President of the Maryland State Firefighter’s Association, Skip Carey, said the community came together to recognize the firefighters’ important service.

“They’re giving up something that is the most precious that they got, which is time, cause time is life, these people that are doing this for free is unbelievable, so just support them.”

Elected officials were also in attendance like state senator Mary Beth Carozza. She said the 100-year milestone is a reflection of all the hard work the community has put in. “We’ve seen the number for the cadets has just increased, so we want to bring more along, and we have more members joining the volunteer company and we need them for our community and need them to be successful.”

Whittington is hopeful for what’s to come for the volunteer fire company. “When you’re talking about milestones, let’s get to 125 years, 150 years, 175 years, our goal is to keep going, because our community and Parsonsburg and Wicomico County is so important.”
