Local Law Enforcement is finding innovative ways to connect with younger residents

Mindful Messages

Laurel, De. – Nowadays, law enforcement agencies might find it hard to connect with the younger generation, who is always coming up with creative ways to express themselves with catchphrases and innovative lingo. That being said, one local department is determined to connect with their residents in a unique way. Reporters dove deep into this and found the ‘tea’ or the details on this story.

‘Click it or Ticket’, ‘Keep Calm, and Drive On’. These are just a few phrases law enforcement has used to grab the youth’s attention. Now, in Delaware, a local police department is trying to keep up with the new slang, posting on their Facebook page a sign that says, ‘Safe Driving is Very Demure, Very Mindful’. Laurel Police Department’s Chief Robert Kracyla says they use many tactics to build relationships with the community.

“So, I’ve been around a long time, but a lot of the people that work for me are younger, so it’s almost a different language…Words like mindfulness and demure, which are not really words that I use too often quite honestly, we put them out there on our post, because we know that’s something that the community connects with.”

Chief Kracyla says at the end of the day, both the police and the public, are human. “We recently hosted a laurel night out and we went out into the community and literally engaged with the community directly. Really it was like a bonding event with the community and police… We have a human factor, we all have families, and children and we’ll all have parents. and we understand some of us come from different backgrounds, different race, color, creed, but we’re all a part of one community here.”

The Department says they will have plenty more events to connect with the community in the near future. If you want to know more about the department and what they have in store, visit their website, or call their non-emergency line at (302)-875-2244.
