Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off with a bang at the ‘Festival Hispano De Georgetown’
GEORGETOWN, Del. – The 2024 Festival Hispano, brought in people of many cultures to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. There were over 50 vendors at the festival, and 7 musicians on the main stage.
Columbian Barber, Anuel Cortez, said community is why this event is so special in the local area. “When all the community comes to enjoy the food, the music, enjoy talking to the people, and big business and small business they go and we’re like a family.” He said, many of the festivalgoers were there to celebrate Independence Day for Central America.
Culture, community, and heritage were major themes of the event. Sussex Tech was at the event to promote the Adult Education Program. The program helps people from other countries, learn English to be able to get into the workforce.
Sherill Howard, from Sussex Tech, said the program is so helpful to the community. “We have 6 different levels of English, everything from somebody who doesn’t know hello how are you? To someone who can converse.”
Howard goes on to explain, that after they get certified, there are many trades, Sussex Tech can offer. “They can follow the class up to level six, and once they reach level six, they can take a certificate program such as nursing assistant, CDL, welding, or some other trades we have here.”
Howard believes Sussex Tech is one of the building blocks of Georgetown.
