Expert weighs in on upcoming election and rhetoric use on the campaign trail

DELMARVA. – With many local candidates on the campaign trail this election season, assistant professor of communication at Salisbury University, Joshua Bolton, said during this cycle, what you say to your potential constituents, matters.

“When we get down to the local level, it becomes more of a, ‘this is who I am, this is who I stand for, this is what I’ll do for you in this community,” Bolton said.

Bolton said Rhetoric is important during election season, and what you say can make a difference to voters. That’s why Bolton said controversy surrounding remarks made by former President Donald Trump about Haitian immigrants serves as a reminder to politicians that one false claim can follow you throughout your campaign.

“You’re not really trying to convince people that didn’t know who to vote for, to vote for you, because there aren’t that many people like that that exist. What you’re trying to do is convince people that are predisposed to being on your side that yes, you are on their side, and they should show up and vote for you,” Bolton said.
