Attempted traffic stop in Bethany leads to pursuit, crash

BETHANY BEACH, Del. – Bethany Beach Police are investigating a chase that resulted in a crash Thursday morning.

We’re told at around 10:45 a.m., an officer saw a red Honda Accord commit a moving violation and subsequently initiated a traffic stop, however, the vehicle disregarded the officer’s lights and sirens. Officers pursued the vehicle northbound on Coastal Highway, during which the Honda reportedly drove in a reckless manner and made a U-turn south of the Indian River Inlet Bridge, where the driver continued driving at a high rate of speed.

The chase was discontinued out of safety to other motorists, as is the Bethany Beach Police Departmental policy. Police say the Honda continued driving southbound at a high rate of speed, later resulting in a crash.

Delaware State Police are investigating the crash, while Bethany Beach Police continue to investigate all offenses pertaining to the chase.
