Wicomico Co. Council votes to override Executive’s veto regarding motor sports events

Wicomico County

WICOMICO CO., Md. – The Wicomico County Council has voted to override the County Executive’s veto of legislation to enhance transparency and overnight on motor sports events.

The legislation requires County Council approval for any leases, licenses, permits, or contracts involving motor sports events on county property. The bill mandates that all motor sports events involving vehicles powered by combustion engines, such as automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and off-road vehicles, receive explicit approval from the County Council before proceeding. This is to help address community concerns about public safety, environmental quality, and community well-being.

The County Executive has expressed concerns that the legislation could possibly shift the balance of power within county government, but the Council maintains that the primary objective is to promote greater transparency and ensure that the community’s interests are protected.

The County Executive is required to submit an annual list of proposed motor sports to the County Council by January 1st every year. New or additional events must be approved by the Council throughout the year.
