The importance of microchipping your furry friends

DELMARVA – If you’re a pet owner, you may consider getting your furry companion microchipped.

Microchips are very small and are implanted under the skin, and can be registered to a number of different individuals.

Sara Smith, Senior Director of Marketing and Communications at the Brandywine Valley SPCA, says it’s a great way to ensure that if you and your pet get separated, you can be properly reunited. She adds that one of the most important things about microchipping is making sure that the registration is always up to date, especially through any changes in the pet’s ownership.

“You need to remember to update your registration with the microchip company so that they are attached to you and attached to the right owner so that way they can be reunited.”

The Brandywine Valley SPCA has seen many success stories with microchips, including a cat from Tennesee found on a Walmart truck in Sussex County. Smith also says a microchip helped reunite a pup with his owner in Baltimore, five years after he went missing.

“If it wasn’t for the microchip we would have no way of knowing that, so it really is such an important tool.”
