Talbot Co. Sheriff’s Office warning of phone scam

Scam Alert

TALBOT COUNTY, Md. – The Talbot County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a telephone scam where the called reportedly identifies themselves as a member of the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office, most recently Major Stephen Elliot or Sheriff Joseph Gamble.

We’re told the caller threatens the victim with being arrested if a cash payment is not sent through a “coinme” ATM. The victim is told to withdraw money from their bank and send the money through the ATM to a phone number and pin supplied by the caller. In most cases, the caller stays on the line with the victim and walks them through the process.

The Talbot County Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens that they will not contact you by phone and demand money to avoid arrest. If you receive a call, you are urged to hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office at 410-822-1020.
