Salisbury Airport anticipating millions in grant funding
SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury airport is gearing up to receive more than $7 million in grant funding.
About $5 million will be coming from the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program.
The grant money hinges on Wicomico County matching 5% of the total, a $366,000 bill that county council agreed to foot at Tuesday’s meeting.
All of these funds will be going towards the last phase of the airport’s long-planned runway extension project.
“In the future, it’ll give us better capabilities for either larger aircraft or aircraft that have to fly longer distances without having to stop for fuel along the way,” said Airport Director Tony Rudy.
Rudy added that the current length of the runway impacts operations with Piedmont Airlines, with those aircraft needing a longer runway in order to reach destinations like Charlotte with a full load.
