Police continue investigating Georgetown crash

GEORGETOWN, Del. – Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a crash that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old volunteer firefighter Tuesday afternoon.
Shortly before 4:30 p.m., police say a Chevrolet Malibu was driving eastbound on Lewes-Georgetown Highway, west of Gravel Hill Road. At the same time, a Toyota Camry was driving eastbound in front of the Malibu. According to police, preliminary investigation revealed that the Malibu was trying to pass the Camry, and when it re-entered the eastbound lane ahead of the Camry, the Malibu sideswiped the Camry before veering off the road and hitting a utility pole.
After the crash, 23-year-old Thomas Berry III, a volunteer firefighter with the Georgetown and Ellendale Fire Companies and a Logistics Technician with Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, stopped to help the drivers involved in the crash. While helping the driver of the Malibu, the utility pole reportedly snapped and brought down the electrical wires. Berry was pronounced dead at the scene as a result.
The driver of the Malibu, a 37-year-old Salisbury man, was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Camry, a 54-year-old Milton woman, was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation.
