Pocomoke City kicks off historical Fair

The Great Pocomoke Fair

MARYLAND – One of Maryland’s historical fairs is here and as they say, they have quote “something for everyone”. While nothing says community like a friendly competition, in Pocomoke, even the pumpkins win First Place!

From Painted Pictures to Pickled Peppers at the Great Pocomoke Fair judges have seen it all! Although some come for the rides, President Lee Carey tells us why their competitions are so important. “They want to get their taste out there, they want to get their skills out there, and what better way?.. It brings community together. It’s more like a family, you know, we all judge, we all think about our community, and bring people together, and keep this thing alive”

Exhibit Coordinator Alice Jean Ennis, known as “AJ” to fairgoers, has been judging for 25 years. She says their rich history garnered over 700 entries this year. Whether it’s quilts, crafts, or Legos, each category is scrutinized. Alice says her favorite thing to judge is the baked goods and she encourages people to see what’s come from all over. “We’re getting a lot of canning, and we’re get a lot of baking. Vegetables used to be a thing, but the weather and the heat have not done us good this year… I think you would love to come out and see all the things that have been exhibited by the people of not only Pocomoke, but Worcester, Somerset, and Wicomico County, and Virginia, Accomack. We have people from Virginia that have displayed.”

Both Lee and Alice say, it’s not really about who wins or loses, this is about the future generations. Alice says, “For the children it builds good relationships with their parents, because they work together.” Lee wraps up by saying, “We do this for the kids, because we want them to get involved, we want them to see what we’ve done, their grandparents did, their parents did, and we want them to grow.”

The Great Pocomoke Fair opened officially today at 5 pm with one of their favorite things to judge, The Little Miss Pageant. The fair will continue Friday and Saturday from 8 am to 10 pm, and it ends Sunday, August 11th at 6:00 pm.
