OCPD warning public about new scam

OCEAN CITY, Md. – Ocean City Police are warning the public about a new email scam.

Police said a resident received an email from someone claiming to be Ocean City Police Chief Buzzuro.

The email falsely informed the resident that they owed money related to inheritance fees. Officials said scammers make their ploy convincing by using publicly available information, adding that you will never be asked to send money directly to any officer or police department.

“Specifically here in Maryland, the police department, we don’t take the fines for warrants and traffic violations. That’s all handled through the district court, so that wouldn’t even be something that we would be collecting the money for,” said Ashley Miller, OCPD Communications Manager.

Officials added that email display names and phone numbers can be easily faked to appear legitimate. If you receive any suspicious phone call or email, you can always contact the department directly.
