New ultrasound technology implemented at Fruitland Vol. Fire Company
FRUITLAND, Md – Ground-breaking technology, will help Fruitland paramedics bridge the gap to become even more effective, in saving lives. Called the Cosmos, it allows for EMS on the field, to diagnose and check those affected from trauma injuries.
Clinical educator, Matt Wall said, this technology changes the process, for paramedics who first get on the scene. “This technology wasn’t available in the back of an ambulance before so now paramedics and firefighters, have access to ultrasound, they’re able to look inside of the body with the ultrasound and answer questions that they weren’t able to before.”
Fruitland is one of the first EMS agencies in the state of Maryland to have ultrasound devices, and it’s the first to have one in Wicomico County, Fruitland paramedic, Dave Merritt said this is game-changing.” where before we would have to roll them in, they would either send them to ET or MRI and do the ultrasound, now were, kind of cutting that time down for them to give them that better patient care and patient improvement.”
The first 30 minutes to an hour after injury, is called the golden hour, and getting care in that time frame is crucial for life-and-death situations. Wall said having this technology makes the department more efficient and effective. “Ultrasound is becoming the standard of care for patients and so it really because of the impact it is having clinically it’s something that should be in the back of every ambulance, of every doctor’s office,” said Wall.
Merritt believes this is the next step, for a productive future, and he’s excited for what’s to come, “at the end of the day, we’re setting up our new clinicians our young clinicians to take the football down the field even further.”
