Midshore Meals Til Monday offers a helping hand to those in need

Eastern Shore, Md – The Eastern Shore is one the most food insecure places in the state of Maryland, and there is a local group, that wants to make change to help solve childhood hunger.

Midshore Meals Til Monday, executive director Pamela Allen, said this is because the area is a food desert. “There are locations in the county that don’t have grocery stores, or the grocery store is far away, again, that lack of transportation, they can’t get there.”  Said Allen.

Allen said the summer is one of the hardest times for the impoverished, “Kids are in need, and our families are in need, our primary mission is to provide food for children, but we understand that children are a part of families, so we look to provide for families as well.”

The group partners with schools’ systems for various programs, and Monday and Thursday, they head out to low-income communities to drop off food.

“Well in the summer the kids are not in school, so there not getting that breakfast and lunch from the school system, as well as now they’re home all day in most cases,” said Allen.

The Maryland Food Bank works alongside with the group sending food and grant money to make the operati0n work.

The group is always looking for volunteers and welcomes donations. For more information you can visit the website here
