High School Football Preview 2024: Stephen Decatur

BERLIN, Md. – The Decatur Seahawks are looking to recreate their championship magic from the 2023 season. They went undefeated and captured their first state football title in school history.

But now in 2024, the Seahawks will be facing the pressure of repeating as champions.

“It’s hard going back to bed, but I feel like we can do it this year, even though we lost some good players. But I got faith in my team. My team has faith in me, and we’re just going to keep riding together,” says Decatur Wide Receiver Davin Chandler.

Head Coach Jake Coleman says eight of the eleven key players on both sides of the ball are returning. However, the main ones missing this year are Careen Bolden, Gavin Solito, and last year’s Maryland 2A Player of The Year Brycen Coleman.

Davin Chandler, Trybe Wise, Ethan Bradshaw, Garrett Maloney, Zakari Bakers, Nathan Tapley, Amarian Manuel, and Dalontae Henry are some of the key returning players who are tasked to lead the Seahawks back to the promised land.

But the biggest question of this squad is who will suit up as starting quarterback?

Coach Coleman says it is between Johnny Hobgood and Blake Caccamo.

“We’re hopeful that we’re going to get quality play from both of them, either one. So we’re excited about that, but that decision hasn’t been made just yet,” he says.

Even though Coleman is confident about their skills, he wants his team to improve little by little each week so the Seahawks can give themselves their best shot of bringing home another trophy.

We’d love to go back to back. I mean everybody does. But we just got to focus on getting better. There’s some great bayside teams and I don’t think we would have gotten to the point where we could win a state championship without having such a great competitive conference. If we don’t stay focused on us and we don’t stay focused on getting better every day, then what happened last year will not matter at all,” he says
