Fresh Start back to school event setting up children for success heading into the school year

SALISBURY, Md – The annual Fresh Start back-to-school event in the civic center, for Wicomico County students was a success. The themes of the event were fresh backpacks, school supplies, haircuts, and community.

Lead organizer, Tara O’Barsky said, this was everything she wanted it to be when planning the event,” we had about 2700 people into the turns stiles last year, and we’re anticipating to be able to double that this year so we’re excited to bring this back, we’re excited to have school supplies, barbers, vendors, helping everyone get a fresh start to the school year, it’s amazing.

With the school year kicking off on September 3rd in Wicomico County, Wolc representative, Kenson Raymond, looks to continue to uplift community members, especially those who are still learning English as their second language.

“Hoping that the families, the Haitian families, or immigrants’ families that need that communication or have those communication barriers, because it’s super important that you’re heard.”

O’Barksy, feels every child should have easy access to a successful school year, “We should be here to break down those barriers, for families so they can all be successful, so they can be healthier so they can be stronger.”

Community is important in every city, town, even in the school building. O’Barksky said it takes a village to make events like this possible. “I just want to say thank you to everyone who made this possible, because it’s certainly not just a one-person show, the vendors who made it out here, these barbers and hairstylists who are giving their time, the volunteers of 95 people giving their time.”
