Emerging leader: SkillsUSA group

WMDT – It’s Monday and that means it’s time to introduce you to a new emerging leader in the Delmarva community.

Four students recently represented Sussex Technical High School at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference.

For students, it’s an opportunity for them to show off their skills in a variety of events that could include automotive, construction, graphic arts, or for these students, video news production.

Kiara Davis, McKinley Stokley, Ciara Gustin, and Piper Drace won a bronze medal for their broadcast.

They competed with over 16,000 students!

Each of the group members have a strong passion for media and entertainment.

They tell us this was a great way of preparing them for the workforce as they created an entire production themselves.

Drace was the director; Davis was the floor manager; both Stokley and Gustin were anchors.

They say due to the pandemic they could not compete earlier, but it gave them the extra time they needed to prepare.

The group learned to trust in themselves and their abilities when it comes to chasing their dreams.

They say they were beyond excited when they won and happy their hard work paid off.

They went into the competition very nervous and concerned, but afterwards they were left feeling very confident.

If you know someone that you think would be perfect for our emerging leader segment – please send your recommendation to us at newsroom@wmdt.com
