Discover Delmarva: Coastal Wilds
FRANKFORD, Del. – Coastal Wilds is a must-visit for anyone with an affinity for animals or the environment. Brand Manager Zach Bova was kind enough to introduce WMDT to some of our more unique residents here on Delmarva. “We have over thirty-five different species of animal ambassadors” from kangaroos to sloths, and even otters. These ambassadors are here to help educate on the importance of wildlife conservation.
They say their approach is not one you’ll find in many other places around the United States. Hands-on interaction with the animals helps drive that connection. One of those interactions may even require a swimsuit! “Our biggest attraction is our otter swim, you get 45 minutes in the pool with two otters,” says Bova. However, if you’re not up for swimming, giving them a high-five through tiny holes in their enclosure we’re told will bring just as much enjoyment.
Bova also tells us, that they offer multiple recurring events each week from kangaroo yoga, sippin’ with sloths, and daily encounter tours throughout the park.
Each tour is unique each time you venture through the preserve. Bova tells us the goal is to hang out with the animals and go hands-on during encounters with certain ambassadors; Getting an up-close experience you may have never thought was possible.
WMDT met one of the stars of Coastal Wilds, Thor, a red kangaroo native to Australia. He even decided to check out our camera we’re also told he loves being the center of attention.
Inside the barn, you’ll find some of the tropical residents such as sloths and iguanas. Traveling through the rest of the park you’ll meet owls, llamas, goats, and alpacas’ all with a varying range of personalities.
Bova says each animal has had its journey to Coastal Wilds “All of our animals, none of them are wild animals. They are all from other facilities that no longer need them. Or, some are owner surrenders.” We’re also told their goal is to “create a very special bond between animals and people” to bring awareness to some of the dangers their counterparts may face in the wild.
They also offer a variety of seasonal events that can be found on their website. You’ll find their seasonal hours and all the information needed to plan your visit there as well.
