Crash claims life of pedestrian in Accomack Co.

OAK HALL, Va. – Virginia State Police say a pedestrian was killed in a crash Monday night in Accomack County.

According to police, the crash happened just before 10 p.m. on Route 13, south of the Route 175 intersection. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 Toyota Prius was driving northbound on Route 13 when the driver allegedly hit a pedestrian walking in the left travel lane.

The pedestrian, identified as 53-year-old Thomas Wharton, died upon impact.

The driver of the Prius, identified as 36-year-old Judea Van Smith, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say there is no indication that speed was a contributing factor, and it is unknown at this time if alcohol played a factor in the crash. No charges were filed at the scene, but the investigation is ongoing.
