Cambridge property owners can pay to repair sidewalks in new city initiative
CAMBRIDGE, Md – The city of Cambridge has come up with a new initiative to improve sidewalks to keep the area accessible and safe. Titled the ‘Cambridge – Sidewalk-Improvement-Program.
Director of Public Services, Wayne Suggs said the process will impact the town the right way, “The contractor that won that award, we’ll now chip up, take out, and put back concrete sidewalks at 4-inch standard sidewalks at $7.50 per square foot.”
This new cost-effective and comprehensive strategy is aimed at residents, and property owners, among others and Assistant City Manager Brandon Hesson says this is just the latest idea of the city’s newest plans. “This program is a new example of an idea we hope helps solve the issues of the town.”
The city would front the original costs from contractors and work with homeowners as they pay the city back. Suggs said this will bring better infrastructure overall “The city will pay the contractor as the work gets done, and the houseowner will pay the city back in 5 equal payments with no interest over 5 years.” Said Suggs.
In order for a property owner’s sidewalk to be repaired, they must apply and get approved before work will get started.
“From those applications, we’ve gotten just under 100,000 dollars’ worth of concrete repairs under contract, we’ve repaired about 28,000 dollars so far the rest are on the list to get done. ”
Suggs also said, there is plenty of money still left, for owners if they still want to get signed up and apply. “We still have another 100,000 worth of sidewalks to get signed up, so if you want to sign up for the program, now is a good time.” Said Suggs.
