Another year, another successful 2024 Poor Girls Open

OCEAN CITY, Md – The 30th annual Poor Girls Open was the highlight of the weekend’s events, and the community continues its fight against cancer.

Mob Squad boat captain, Harley Sampson said there is nothing like this community.

“Cheering each other on, we’re helping each other out, you know hey, you need something, we might have it on the boat, let me help you out, it’s just a wonderful community to be a part of.”

This year’s tournament reached an even bigger milestone, now hitting 2 million dollars in its history. Poor Girls Open Shawn Harman said, they’re happy with the results of the past weekend. “We were up about from 148 boats to 166, so there a little bit more money involved, which everyone likes and with that donation, we’ll be able to go over those 2 million dollars in donations in 20 years so we’re very happy.”

Around 200,000 dollars was donated to the American Cancer Society this year, and Harley Sampson reeled in a win during the tournament, she said it’s feeling like nothing she has felt before, “it’s just a fantastic feeling, kudos to all anglers this weekend, it was a wonderful tournament, and we’re raising money for an amazing cause.”

Many of the women who compete in the tournament are survivors or relatives of survivors, perseverance is something that comes naturally to them. Harman said, a determination is the only word, that can describe competitors.

“It’s been 20 years of me running it, it’s gotten better every year, the women fish like their animals, they don’t want to hear no, they don’t want to hear it’s too rough. No man can handle the drive that women have”

The tournament is growing bigger and getting better every year, and Sampson is happy to be here to support a great cause.

“This tournament is growing every year, its great that everybody comes together to raise money for breast cancer.”
