West Rehoboth mural destruction arrest
DELAWARE- Mural Destruction that happened earlier this month on June 13th, left the community shaken. The hit-and-run was said to have happened at approximately 6:17 a.m. when the mural was struck by a Chevrolet pickup truck on Central Avenue. Delaware State Police say they arrested the man they believe struck it just days before a Juneteenth celebration.
Delaware State Police reported on June 26th, a 19-year-old man was taken into custody. The Rehoboth Beach resident was charged with traffic offenses related to leaving the scene of a property damage crash. They say he was not charged with any felony and was released on his own recognizance.
Originally there were concerns this incident was racially motivated, as the mural depicted a piece of black history but Police say they are confident this was not a hate crime, just an unfortunate accident, and that the actions that took place had no significance to the building or content displayed on the mural.
Delaware State Police say they will keep the community updated on any further details.
