Somerset Co. works to preserve Black church

SOMERSET, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore held a film showing, Saturday.

Eroding History, a climate justice story at the intersection of sea level rise, historic racism and the disappearance of Black communities, is a film by Andre Chung.

The Somerset County NAACP sponsored the film to highlight the importance of preserving one of Deale Island’s only Black Churches.

“We wanted to highlight John Wesley United Methodist Church, which is basically the only Black church that was in Deale Island, which has suffered from the high tides and the water,” Johnson said.
