July 1st marks beginning of Vehicle Theft Prevention Month

MARYLAND – July is National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car thefts increased by 25% from 2019 to 2023.

And, according to the Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council, a vehicle is stolen every 47 minutes in the state.

State and local authorities are urging motorists to take precautions and remain vigilant, in order to reduce the chances of having your car stolen.

“We just want to constantly remind people to harden the target, to lock your doors and lock your windows, keep your vehicle in well-lit areas in the evening. Lighting is always the number one deterrent to criminal conduct,” said Worcester County Sheriff Matt Crisafulli.

Sheriff Crisafulli added that it’s important to keep copies of your car’s registration and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) at home, to help authorities find your vehicle as quickly as possible in the event that it does get stolen.
