Good Morning Delmarva features Chaska the Andean bear
SALISBURY, Md. – Once a month, GMD features an animal from the Salisbury Zoo.
We’re meeting Chaska the Bear! This Andean bear species, also known as the spectacled bear is native to the Andes Mountains. Jessica Mandelson, the Registrar for the Zoo tells us Chaska is known to be incredibly inquisitive, and loves to interact with zoo keepers and guests.
Chaska has been there since she was four years old and she is an excellent patient for the zoo keepers, and again loves to interact. The SBY Zoo is program partners with Andean bear safe, which is a concentrated effort to save that species from extinction. Keeping her blood line going is essential to the species, so her off spring is at different zoos and animal sanctuaries to continue those efforts.
To learn more about Chaska or other animals the Salisbury Zoo has to offer, you can visit their website or visit the zoo in person. They’re open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day and offer free admission and parking.
