Good Morning Delmarva discusses the annual Nanticoke River Invasive Fishing Derby!

WMDT – This Saturday, July 20th, Salisbury University is hosting its annual Nanticoke River Invasive Fishing Derby!

It’s a great opportunity for anglers to show off their skills while getting rid of the invasive species damaging our waterways.

This morning, Noah Bressman, the event organizer, stopped by Good Morning Delmarva to tell us more about it.

Bressman says there’s quite a few invasive species in our area, but it’s most important to focus on blue catfish and northern snakehead.

There is a difference between blue catfish and the catfish native to our area.

They come from other states nearby and can grow up to 140 pounds!

The biggest problem with blue catfish is that they will eat just about anything including muskrat, birds, and crabs.

He stresses that it’s important we help protect the native creatures they prey on and keep removing these species.

Bressman tells us the Derby is completely free thanks to the funding from the Office of Graduate Studies.

Instead, they have teamed up with businesses in the area to give out lots of prizes.

You can set up as early as 5 a.m. and weight-in will be at 1:30 p.m.
