MARYLAND – Tragedy struck the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office when one of their own, Corporal Glenn Hilliard, lost his life in the line of duty back in June of 2022. Since his death, the community has rallied behind the family to provide lots of love and support.

People say home is where the heart is. Well, sadly, the heart of this home, Cpl. Glenn Hilliard was killed 2 years ago in the line of duty. Since then, Tunnel to Towers has ensured this family’s house stays there forever. Tashica Hilliard was a stay-at-home mother of three who had just left her 14-year career to go back to school when her husband was slain in the line of duty.
She had no idea how she was going to manage, but luckily, she didn’t have to. “When he passed away, the thought was, how am I going to take care of my family?… Just 2 days after my husband was killed, we were notified that Tunnels to Towers was going to take steps to ensure our mortgage would be paid for… I have not had to pay, make a mortgage payment since he passed away.”

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis says they moved quicker than even the family expected. “Literally within 12 hours, Tunnel to Towers was on the phone with me wanting to assume the mortgage of Deputy Glen Hillard and his surviving spouse Tashica and their 3 beautiful children.” John Huvane is the Vice President for Tunnel to Towers, an organization started after 9/11 to support families. He says they had no choice but to help out the Hilliard family. “The real heroes are the survivors, the people that have to get up every morning, and Tashica has gotten up every morning for her children without her partner, and she’s done an amazing job.”

Tashica says that while she’s thankful the mortgage to the forever home she built with her husband years ago is finally taken care of, there’s still a missing piece. Not a day goes by when she doesn’t miss Glenn. “Just for my well-being, and unfortunately my mental health. you know it’s hard going day in and day out going into my bedroom missing my husband… Hopefully, with the mortgage paid off I’ll be able to make some changes, to make it, it’s still ours, but… different.”

Tashina says that she is very grateful for all the support her family has gotten over the years and is so glad her husband is still a big part of the community. Tunnel to Towers says they will help always help the families of fallen heroes and are honored to be a part in helping the Hilliard family.
