Experts share tips on how Senior citizens can stay safe in the sun

Md. – Temperatures are rising and the Centers for Disease Control says people 65 and older are more prone to heat-related health problems.

Experts say due to their age, they are more likely to acquire a chronic medical condition that can change the body’s normal response to heat.
Sally Dowling, the Vice President of Medical Affairs for Atlantic General Hospital, says we should constantly check in on our elders.
She says that many of them don’t use their air conditioning even if they have one…

“They don’t necessarily get the same sensation of thirst, a lot of elderly people are not good hydrators for a number of different reasons, sometimes the medications they’re on… Going out earlier in the morning, going out later in the day is helpful, of course trying to be in the shade if that’s at all possible.”

She goes on to say their generation may not have grown up hydrating properly and it’s never too late to start. The CDC says to take cool showers and be sure not to engage in any strenuous activities.
