DSU partners with Milford Wellness Center for geriatric initiative

DELAWARE – Education Enhancements are underway. Delaware State University announced its partnership with the Milford Wellness Village to boost the healthcare workforce.

Senator Tom Carper, DSU President Tony Allen, and Dean Gwendolyn Scott-Jones all say that partnerships are possible. After 3 years of planning, DSU partnered with Education Health Research Internationals for their geriatric initiative.

Dean Gwendolyn Scott-Jones says this is important because this area needs healthcare workers for senior citizens. “We did it. you can clap, we did it. We were awarded $5 million dollars with a performance period of 5 years… We actually need to make sure we take care of the individuals who may have some cognitive issues, health-related issues, more specifically, dementia.”
adults.”

DSU President Tony Allen says that this partnership might not have happened if wasn’t for the Dean working with the Rabbi. Now, the grant can help bring more resources to the school. “So as a partner of this grant, we actually have transportation so they can come from Delaware State to the Wellness Village regularly and get the kind of world-class opportunities that they are looking for.”

Also in attendance was Delaware’s Senior U.S. Senator Tom Carper.  He shared that he turned 77 years old this year, and these types of initiatives help his community. “There’s a great partnership that’s been formed here between Delaware State University and $5 million from the federal government. Working here with this wellness center to be able to provide care for folks who are 60, 70, 89, 90 years old.”

Senator Carper says this was not only a great step for DSU, but for Delaware as a whole. “People like to come here, and they like to come and retire. We want to make sure that when they retire, they have the kind of healthcare that they need so live healthy, happy lives.”

School officials say the funds they have received will go a long way in furthering the education of so many young people in healthcare and the senior population.
