Community speaks out against Milford School District censorship policy
DELAWARE – Controversy has made its way to the classroom. The Milford School board is considering revisions to an existing but controversial policy on censorship in school. The main point of contention tonight is Policy 6103 which addresses controversial issues in the schools.
A proposed amendment to that policy would include what they refer to as quote “sensitive” issues as well. Unfortunately, some residents are upset with the proposed changes. For instance, one change would allow all staff to “present and permit multiple viewpoints and the expression of the opinions of others.”
Greg Layton is a member of the Milford Community and a former Milford High School graduate. He says this policy can be taken out of context and will cause more confusion than cohesiveness. “Pretty much everything can be considered offensive by someone and so choices will be made, and the way those choices will be made I suspect, will discriminate against vulnerable students, unpopular viewpoints.”
Layton feels this would open up to teaching everything from the holocaust denial to flat-earth theories, and that the proposed changes are a recipe for disaster. WMDT will have more details to come as this story unfolds.
