Community members rally together to feed Somerset Co. residents
CRISFIELD, Md. – Somerset County community members rallied together, Saturday, to create a one-stop shop for those who needed food resources.
Event coordinator, McCoy Curtis, said helping a neighbor in need is at the core of his mission.
“Our target has been the Lower Shore’s vulnerable population, as they’ve been called, and this is something that we started all the way back since COVID,” Curtis said.
The idea behind the drive-up pantry was to allow people to come, get what they needed and head out, no questions asked.
Curtis said this system cultivates a more comfortable environment between volunteers and residents.
“With our particular food distribution, you don’t have to sign up for anything,” Curtis said. “We just show up in different locations throughout Somerset County once a month, and we try to get notification out soon enough to notify anybody where we’re going to be.”
And some people came to pick up food and decided to stay and help.
Bruce Donohue was one of the early birds at the pantry and decided to lend a hand, to help Curtis and his crew.
“This is kind of a remote town. There’s not as much available as in cities up the road, so we have a food desert,” Donohue said. “It’s hard to get access, especially to the fruits and vegetables and stuff like that, so we’re grateful for any help that we can get.”
