Blood Bank of Delmarva urgently in need of O-type blood

DELMARVA – The Blood Bank of Delmarva is in urgent need of O+ and O- blood donations.

We’re told the shortage is impacting local hospitals and is part of a national trend of Type O shortages. The current inventory of type O blood is the lowest it has been since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials say.

A recent surge in blood usage is further complicating the shortage, with seven massive transfusion protocols occurring across the region in the past several days. MTPs involve administering 10 or more units of blood to a patient within 24 hours but can often require 50 or more life-saving blood products per patient.

The Blood Bank of Delmarva is calling on all individuals with Type O blood to make an immediate donation.
