Atlantic General shares summer health tips for our overweight population

MARLAND- A State of Maryland health study from 2020 found that 65% of Marylanders over the age of 18 were classified as overweight or obese.

Obese people can suffer from High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, liver and intestine cancer. According to Amy Gehrig, registered dietician at Atlantic General, during the summer months, it’s easy to overeat things like greasy foods and alcohol- which can affect your overall health.

She says many of her patients don’t want to go outside in the heat, and so they aren’t getting enough physical activity. “You know, you definitely need to hydrate and the more you weigh, actually the more hydration you need… And also just, getting out. I know it’s summer. But trying to get 150 minutes of physical activity a week. But whatever you enjoy. I always say find something you like to do. Whether it is walking or swimming.”

Gehrig says swimming is great for our obese population because it’s easy on the joints. She also suggested eating healthier meals and supporting your local farmers market can really help with your fiber intake, which helps with weight gain.

Overall, she wanted to encourage everyone no matter how much you weigh, to stay active, eat plenty of foods, and stay hydrated this summer. In addition, support local farmers markets by getting plenty of fruits and vegetables so you can ensure you get the fiber you need.
