UNA holds 1st annual disc golf fundraiser at Schumaker Park
SALISBURY, Md – Sunday, United Needs and Abilities held a fundraiser benefiting people with disabilities on the Eastern Shore.
For years, UNA has been providing assistance to people with disabilities on the eastern shore. Until this year, they only held one annual fundraiser, a golf tournament in the fall.
CEO Sarah Gleason was thrilled with the turnout they got for their first disc golf tournament: “A lot of people don’t really know the sport, so I think people were hesitant in first registering, but we’ve had a lot of walk-up crews today. We have a family here from New Hampshire that came, and all the way from Princess Anne, we’ve had folks drive up to support us.”
Gleason said that even though they are raising funds, the main goal is simply spreading their message.
“And I hope what this does is raise awareness for what we do. It’s not so much about the money as it is about throwing a great event for the community and asking for support and recognizing that there’s people on the shore that do need help,” Gleason said.
The money raised Sunday is going towards UNA’s cash assistance program, supporting people with disabilities who don’t receive day-to-day services from UNA. It helps pay for things like special medication and adaptive equipment that insurance might not cover.
“We have quite a few kids that we’ve helped support go to summer camp, which gives their families a little bit of a break and also puts the children with disabilities in a special needs summer camp that’s really been able to expand to their world and give their families much needed support.”
