Property Taxation Outrage among Older-Adults

SALISBURY, Md- Property taxes are at the forefront,

When someone can’t pay their property taxes. Municipalities or the state can sell that debt and an investor can seize their property.

This rule applies to all individuals, businesses, and LLCs.

Executive Director of Wicomico County Habitat for Humanity Molly Hilligoss said there isn’t enough transparency about that process.

“I think the city has a responsibility for telling the public that they have contracted with the county to
collect these taxes and fees. and that’s my point, the transparency to inform the public.” said, Hilligoss.

Hilligoss brought up one of habitats clients as an example case, his grass was cut too high, and he was fined $261.39 and $300 in fees. The gentleman is an elderly veteran who was unaware that he could lose his home over this tax sale.

There is no documentation outlining these taxes, and the elderly gentleman needs to pay off the tax sale amount by Tuesday, June 11th, 2024.
