NASA Wallops Facility plays host to asteroid event

Wallops Island, Va – NASA Wallops Flight facility hosted an event in preparation for National Asteroid Day. Families got to learn more about asteroids and how the Chesapeake Bay crater affected life here in Delmarva.

Educator & Exhibit Specialist, Dana Wright said that the Peninsula formed these last million years.

“The Chesapeake Bay impact crater formed 35 million years ago, when an impacter made contact with this location, the Mid-Atlantic.” said, Wright.

Retired Geologist David Powars is credited with the crater’s discovery and gave a presentation to families and visitors. “It’s so much fun to share, the discovery, and the interesting facts and how we discovered it. It follows science to a Tee.” said, Powars.

The event was ahead of National Asteroid Day on June 30th, and Dana Wright tells us it’s so important that people are educated on the importance of asteroids. “Asteroid day is a really fun event for visitors to explore the research that NASA conducts to understand asteroids because in planetary science asteroids are like fossils and they give us clues about what our early solar system was like,” said Wright.

The event catered to children, with many interactive games, puzzles, and much more.
