Milford man charged with vehicular assault following crash that injured police officer

DOVER, Del. – A major crash in Dover has led to the arrest of a Milford man on numerous charges, including vehicular assault.

Tuesday afternoon, Dover Police were called to help the Capital Police Department with an erratic driver at the Dover Department of Motor Vehicles. Capital Police had tried to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle reversed and intentionally rammed into the occupied police vehicle, injuring the officer.

The officer was taken to Bayhealth Kent Campus for treatment of his injuries.

The vehicle then reportedly left the parking lot and drove northbound on North DuPont Highway, crossing over the median at one point and beginning to travel northbound in the southbound lanes. The driver hit multiple vehicles in the area of East Loockerman Street, causing the vehicle to become disabled. The driver then ran on foot, but was arrested a short time later by Dover Police.

As a result of the crash, a 48-year-old man and a 22-year-old man were both taken to Bayhealth Kent Campus for treatment of injuries.

The driver, 26-year-old Djerryson Charles, was arrested and charged by Dover Police with three counts of first degree reckless endangering, two counts of first degree vehicular assault, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of an accident causing injury, reckless driving, DUI, and several traffic charges. He was held at SCI on a $37,600 cash bail on these charges. Additionally, Charles was charged by Capital Police with first degree assault, two counts of first degree reckless endangering, and two counts of second degree conspiracy. He was held at SCI on a $25,000 unsecured bail on these charges.
