Local youth come together to give back to their community

MILLSBORO, Del. – A well-oiled operation made up of 24 middle schoolers made countless trips to people’s cars with one objective: feeding their neighbor.

The Millsboro Police Department’s Youth Academy teamed up with the Food Bank of Delaware to provide free meals to families in need. It’s a volunteer mission that Sergeant Jonathan Zubrowski said helps the young cadets build character and learn the value of teamwork.

“My goal with this was to show them that unfortunately, there are people that do struggle with money insecurities and food insecurities, and you can always help,” Seargent Zubrowski said.

“If everyone’s coming through and doing their own thing and not working together as a team, it could take forever, and here we are, 25 minutes in, and pretty much ran through all the cars,” Seargent Zubrowski added.

And despite the fact that many of these kids didn’t know each other before the program, volunteer, Erin Kuster, said it brought all of them closer together.

“Team building skills is something we work on a bunch, definitely. Team building skills is helping us with this,” Kuster said.
