Good Morning Delmarva discusses the Invasive Species Fishing Tournament

47ABC – On Saturday, June 22nd, The Worcester County Chamber of Commerce in Ocean Pines is hosting an Invasive Species Fishing Tournament.

It’s an opportunity for all you anglers out there to catch, prepare, and enjoy some delicious fish.

This morning, President Kerrie Bunting, is here to tell us more about the invasive fish in our waterways and how you can participate in this event.

The purpose of the event is to educate anglers about the invasive species in our area while encouraging their removal.

Bunting says that snakehead fish also known as Chesapeake canna and blue catfish are hurting our ecosystem, because they took food away from the other fish that are native to Delmarva.

Thus, the state is making it a top priority to rid the area of them.

In fact, it is now illegal to throw these types of fish back into the water once caught.

Bunting says there’s hope that this can become a local industry!

The tournament will be on the Pocomoke River. Everyone will meet at Bryd Park in Snow Hill at 7AM.

You can go out on your own either on the dock, via boat or canoe, and catch some amazing fish!

There will be a weigh in after party where you can chow down on Chesapeake Canna afterwards.
