Frederick Douglass Unity Day aims to honor Talbot Co. native
EASTON, Md. – This Saturday, June 29th, is the first inaugural Frederick Douglass Unity Day.
The Unity Day entails a crab feast, as well as a car and bike show sponsored by the Bailey-Groce Family Foundation, the only Frederick Douglass Family founded organization in Maryland. The event is meant to bring people together from all walks of life, set purposely between Juneteenth and the 4th of July.
While this day is about bringing the community together, it’s also about raising money for the foundation to fulfill their dream of building an African American cultural center in Talbot County.
Tarence Bailey Sr., founder of the Bailey-Groce Family Foundation, says the center would also aid in furthering their trade program, to help young students find a career.
The hill community needs to be preserved – and I’m from the hill – born and raised and I don’t want to see the memories that I had – and the memories that my former neighbors and my great grandparents. I don’t want to see that knowledge, that history just be forgot about. There’s a whole lot of stories to be told, there’s a whole lot of history to be broken and brought to the forefront. So I can’t walk away and say it is what it is…no, we need a facility.”
