Family home destroyed in local house fire

MARYLAND – A fire in Salisbury destroyed a home on Pratt Road this weekend, and the family is heartbroken. Imagine spending time with your family and you get one most unimaginable call. Your home is on Fire. Well for this local family, they didn’t have to imagine, it was reality.

Kyle Wagner and Sarah Clarke are an average Salisbury family. They have 2 children, 3 dogs and a cat. Saturday, June 1st, at approximately 6 pm their house was set ablaze, a home that Kyle has known his entire life. “This is where all my childhood memories were and all that kind of stuff. You know, even my old jerseys from when I was a kid, trophies, all that stuff gone.

Both Kyle and Sarah are in complete shock and describe what they were doing when they heard the news, and Kyle had to spring into action. “My brother was home thankfully, he was able to get the dogs out of the house in time, I was across town… I raced across town and got here as quick as I could, i ran up and I knew the cat was still in the bedroom, so I ripped out the window, and we were able to get the cat out while the firefighters still worked on the fire.”

Sarah says she’s devastated and has lost so many mementos her children made. “I, my brain didn’t function, I couldn’t really understand what was going on… I have not gone inside… I don’t want to see it.” Kyle had a similar reaction, “So pulling up it was, you know, it hit me that it was, it was fully engulfed. It was, it was bad, it wasn’t just something small.”

Their son is old enough to understand the damage, however, Kyle describes the moment his 3-year-old daughter saw the home. “We drove by for the first time the other day with our daughter in the car, and she looked at the house and said, ‘The house is broken!’ and I was waiting, I knew what she was going to say next, and she goes, ‘Daddy, fix it.’…It hurts, but I’m glad to know it’s just another thing to her, it’s not devastating to her.”

They say they are overwhelmed by all the support, and they are glad the important things made it though, and they are hoping to rebuild within 2 years. “It’s hard, but, we’re all above ground, so we’re very grateful, we still have everything we need even though we’ve lost a lot, but we’re all here. That’s all we can ask for.”

Local Business Sonya’s Floral Boutique is currently accepting drop offs for the family and the community is welcome to donate in support. They also have a go fund me page set up to help and you can donate here.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and the investigation is still underway.
