Experts give tips to keep dogs safe in heat

DELMARVA. – High and humid temperatures are in the forecast on Delmarva, which can present health risks for dogs.

Director of communications for Brandywine Valley SPCA, Sara Smith, said now is the time to be paying extra attention to your pups, to prevent heat-related illnesses.

“If you’re having a hard time, imagine how it is for your pup,” Smith said. “They’re wearing their winter coat all the time, so it’s really important that we’re keeping an eye out for their safety when we’re having to take them out.”

Some dogs are more susceptible to heat exhaustion. If you have either of the following breeds, Smith said paying close attention to signs, like excessive panting and drooling, can save you a pricey visit to the vet.

“If you have a dog like a Bulldog or a Frenchie with the smooshed nose, you want to keep an eye out, especially for them, because they have a harder time regulating the temperature,” Smith said.

And ensuring your pet has access to cool areas and water 24/7 is how Salisbury community program coordinator, Logan Dillon, said you’ll help them live long, prosperous lives.

“Any pet that is a part of a family, it’s a member of a family,” Dillon said. “You want to treat it as such and make sure they have the proper conditions and they’re well taken care of, so they can live a long, healthy life.”
